When I saw this MAGNIFICENT ROYAL BEING at the Flea Market here in Tucson yesterday, I about fell to my knees. Some of you out there in land know what a FREAK I am about fluted beads.... well, here we have the HOLY GRAIL of old, old, handmade fluted beads and squashes. This is arguably the most beautiful squash blossom in the world... well, at least it is to me..

Old Old Old Old Old Old Old

Did I say it was OLD?

LOOK AT THE FLIPPIN old school silver work on this!!!!!!!!!!! Look at the repoussed conchos that top off the central NAJA---each and EVERY bead made by hand.

So.

What\'s the big deal, you ask? Why do I harp on the fact that these beads were all made by hand?

Well, because many of you out there don\'t even know what that means so today I am going to teach you just what it takes to make a bead.....

First, the Silver Smith would have to find an ingot of sterling or pure silver to pound out thin. Just pounding out that ingot could take an hour or so to get the thickness even. Then the Smith has to \"cut out\" each and every \"bead\"--each bead starts out as two flat round disks of silver, like silver-dollar pancakes. Then you have to take each of those disks and drill the holes in them where the string will go and then carefully file down any resulting \"burrs\" and then individually \"dome\" them out to create the circular shape that will be joined together with another domed circular disk to create a bead. You can see here where if you did not cut the disks almost exactly the same size you have the real potential for creating wonky beads... Doming is hard, peeps and easy to screw up so right here you can get a sense of the skill and PATIENCE needed to make even ONE bead!!!! But wait, we are not done yet. Each \"half-bead\" then has to be filed to make sure it will fit evenly over the other \"half-bead.\" Then somehow you have to solder the joint between the two bead halves without burning yourself or squashing the bead by getting it too hot!!!!!!!!!! After all of this work, you now have ONE SMOOTH BEAD...

However, variations are needed on this process if the maker plans for the bead to be fluted or stamped out! Because all of that stamping or fluting has to happen BEFORE the bead is domed out!!!!!!! Who among you has this kind of talent or PATIENCE---to take an ingot and make even ONE bead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is why I am so in AWE of Native American artisans as much of this silver work was done even before we had electricity!! THINK OF THAT, PEEPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually own one of the tools that would have been used to make fluted beads or conchos and I took a photograph of that for you --check photo number 10 up top.

So.

Now you know why fluted and stamped beads are so highly regarded and cherished and sought after in the Native American world! Now you know why this MAGNIFICENT BEING is such a wonder and a MIRACLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Without a doubt the finest squash I have ever seen outside a book or magazine. Go take a gander at the 100\'s of close-up photos I took for you and put inside the slideshow above. Go FALL IN LOVE. You will know if this belongs to your Soul.
