\"Land of the free ... because of the brave!\"

New York Spectator. August 23, 1831

“The court of common pleas of Chester county, [New York] rejected a witness who declared his disbelief in the existence of God. The presiding judge remarked that he had not before been aware that there was a man living who did not believe in the existence of God; that this belief constituted the sanction of all testimony in a court of justice: and that he knew of no cause in a Christian country where a witness had been permitted to testify without such belief.

HISTORY OF THE CHALLENGE COIN

During World War I, American volunteers from all parts of the country filled the newly formed flying squadrons. Some were wealthy scions attending colleges such as Yale and Harvard who quit in mid-term to join the war. In one squadron, a wealthy lieutenant ordered medallions struck in solid bronze carrying the squadron emblem for every member of his squadron. He himself carried his medallion in a small leather pouch around his neck. Shortly after acquiring the medallions, the pilot\'s aircraft was severely damaged by ground fire. He was forced to land behind enemy lines and was immediately captured by a German patrol. In order to discourage his escape, the Germans took all of his personal identification except for the small leather pouch around his neck. In the meantime, he was taken to a small French town near the front. Taking advantage of a bombardment that night, he escaped. However, he was without personal identification. He succeeded in avoiding German patrols and reached the front lines. With great difficulty, he crossed no-man\'s land. Eventually, he stumbled onto a French outpost. Unfortunately, saboteurs had plagued the French in this sector. They sometimes masqueraded as civilians and wore civilian clothes. Not recognizing the young pilot\'s American accent, the French thought him a saboteur and made ready to execute him. Just in time, he remembered his leather pouch containing the medallion. He showed the medallion to his would-be executioners. His French captors recognized the squadron insignia on the medallion and delayed long enough for him to confirm his identity. Instead of shooting him, they gave him a bottle of wine. Back at his squadron, it became a tradition to ensure that all members carried their medallion or coin at all times. This was accomplished through a challenge in the following manner: a challenger would ask to see the coin. If the challenged could not produce his coin, he was required to buy a drink of choice for the member who challenged him. If the challenged member produced his coin, the challenging member was required to pay for the drink. This tradition continued throughout the war and for many years after while surviving members of the squadron were still alive. The fighting men and women of the 48th Intelligence Squadron proudly continue this tradition.

THE CHALLENGE Some Organizations even have regulations regarding Military Coins. Here is an example. A \'Coin Check\' consists of a challenge and a response. 1. RULES: a. The challenge is initiated by drawing your coin, holding it in the air by whatever means possible and state, scream, shout or otherwise verbally acknowledge that you are initiating a coin check. Another, but less vocal method is to firmly place it on the bar, table, Or floor (this should produce an audible noise which can be easily heard by those being challenged, but try not to leave a permanent imprint). If you accidentally drop your coin and it makes an audible sound upon impact, then you have just \"accidentally\" initiated a coin check. (This is called paying the price for improper care of your coin.\" b. The response consists of all those persons being challenged drawing their coin in a like manner (other organizational coins are invalid). You must produce a coin with YOUR UNIT\'S LOGO on it. c. If you are challenged and are unable to properly respond, you must buy a round of drinks for the challenger and the group being challenged. d. If everyone being challenged responds in the correct manner, the challenger must buy a round of drinks for all those people he challenged. e. Failure to buy a round is a despicable crime and will require that you turn-in your Coin to the issuing agency. 2. Coin checks are permitted, ANY TIME, ANY PLACE\'. (Keep OPSEC in mind, be smart!) 3. There are no exceptions to the rules. They apply to those clothed or unclothed. At the time of the challenge, you are permitted one-step and an arms reach to locate your coin. If you still cannot reach it -- SORRY ABOUT THAT! 4. A Coin is a coin. Coins attached on belt buckles are considered \"belt buckles.\" Coins on key chains are considered \"key chains.\" Coins placed in a \"holder/clasp\" and worn around the neck like a necklace are valid and are considered a coin.

Cemetery Escort Duty
WARNING....DO NOT READ.....YOUR MONITOR WILL TEAR UP!

I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey\'s. Sneaking a look at my watch, I saw the time, 1655. Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day.Full dress was hot in the August sun. Oklahoma summertime was as bad
as ever--the heat and humidity at the same level--both too high.
I saw the car pull into the drive, \'69 or \'70 modelCadillac Deville, looked factory-new. It pulled into the parking lot at a snail\'s pace. An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed; she had a cane and a sheaf of flowers--about four or five bunches as best I could tell.
I couldn\'t help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter taste: \'She\'s going to spend an hour, and for this old Marine, my hip hurts like hell and I\'m ready to get out of here right now!\' But for this day, my duty was to assist anyone coming in.
Kevin would lock the \'In\' gate and if I could hurry theold offerdy along, we might make it to Smokey\'s in time.I broke post attention. My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step
and the pain went up a notch. I must have made a real military sight: middle-aged man with a small pot gut and half a limp, in Marine full-dress uniform, which had lost its razor crease about thirty minutes after I began the watch at the cemetery.
I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an old woman\'s squint.
\'Ma\'am,may I assist you in any way?\'
She took long enough to answer.
\'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers? I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.\'
\'My pleasure, ma\'am.\'
Well, it wasn\'t too much of a lie.
She looked again. \'Marine, where were you stationed?\'
\'Vietnam, ma\'am. Ground-pounder. \'69 to \'71.\'
She looked at me closer. \'Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine. I\'ll be as quick as I can.\'
I lied a little bigger: \'No hurry, ma\'am.\'
She smiled and winked at me. \'Son, I\'m 85-years-old and I can tell a lie from a long way off. Let\'s get this done. Might be the last time I can do this. My name\'s Joanne Wieserman, and I\'ve a few Marines I\'d like to see one more time.\'
\'Yes, ma \'am. At your service.\'She headed for theWorld War I section, stopping at a stone. She picked one of the flowers out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone. She murmured something I couldn\'t quite make out. The name on the marble wasDonald S. Davidson,USMC: France 1918.
She turned away and made a straight line for theWorld
War II section, stopping at one stone. I saw a tear slowly tracking
its way down her cheek. She put a bunch on a stone; the name wasStephen X.Davidson, USMC, 1943.
She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone,Stanley
J. Wieserman, USMC, 1944.She paused for a second. \'Two more, son, and we\'ll be done\'
I almost didn\'t say anything, but, \'Yes, ma\'am. Take your time.\'
She looked confused. \'Where\'s the Vietnam section, son? I seem to have lost my way.\'I pointed with my chin. \'That way, ma\'am.\'
\'Oh!\' she chuckled quietly. \'Son, me and old age ain\'t too friendly.\'
She headed down the walk I\'d pointed at. She stopped at a couple of stones before she found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch onLarry Wieserman, USMC, 1968,
and the last onDarrel Wieserman, USMC, 1970.
She stood there and murmured a few words I still couldn\'t make out. \'OK, son, I\'m finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.\'
Yes, ma\'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?\'
She paused. \'Yes,Donald Davidson
was my father,Stephen
was my uncle,Stanley
was my husband,Larry
andDarrel
were our sons. All killed in action, all Marines.\' She stopped. Whether she had finished, or couldn\'t finish, I don\'t know. She made her way to her car, slowly and painfully.I waited for a polite distance to come between us and then double-timed it over to Kevin, waiting by the car.
\'Get to the \'Out\' gate quick. I have something I\'ve got to do.\'
Kevin started to say something, but saw the look I gave him. He broke the rules to get us there down the service road. We beat her. She hadn\'t madeit around the rotunda yet.

\'Kevin, stand at attention next to the gatepost. Follow my lead.\'
I humped it across the drive to the other post. When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short straight traverse to the gate, I called in my best Gunny\'s voice: \'TehenHut! Present Haaaarms!\'
I have to hand it to Kevin; he never blinked an eye--full dress uniform standing at attention
and a salute that would make his DI proud. She drove through that gate with two old worn-out Marines giving her a send-off she deserved, for service rendered to her country, and for knowing duty, honor and sacrifice.
I am not sure, but I think I saw a salute returned from that Cadillac.
Instead of \'The End,\'...just think of \'Taps.\'As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer: \'Lord,
keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home or overseas.
Hold them in your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.\'
Let\'s all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy.
\'In God We Trust.\'
Sorry about your monitor; it made mine blurry too!
\"If we ever forget that we\'re one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under!\"

PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN, 1985

\"There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and those who have met them in battle. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.\" Unknown

WE STOLE THE EAGLE FROM THE AIR FORCE, THE ANCHOR FROM THE NAVY AND THE ROPE FROM THE ARMY.

ON THE SEVENTH DAY WHILE GOD RESTED, WE OVERRAN HIS PERIMETER, STOLE THE GLOBE AND WE\'VE BEEN RUNNING THE WHOLE SHOW EVER SINCE.

WE LIVE LIKE SOLDIERS, TALK LIKE SAILORS, AND SLAP THE HELL OUT OF BOTH OF THEM.

WARRIORS BY DAY, LOVERS BY NIGHT, PROFESSIONALS BY CHOICE, AND MARINES BY THE GRACE OF GOD.

Every now and then, in the middle of the constant barrage of trash that’s just lighting us all up these days, we come across a story, a feat, an event that just makes us stop in our tracks. This was one for me.... Cody Green was a 12-year kid in Indiana who was diagnosed with leukemia at 22 months old. He loved the Marines, and his parents said he drew strength and courage from the Marine Corps. as ...he bravely fought the battle into remission three times. Although he was cancer-free at the time, the chemotherapy had lowered his immune system and he developed a fungus infection that attacked his brain. Two weeks ago, as he struggled to fend off that infection in the hospital, the Marines wanted to show how much they respected his will to live, his strength, honor and courage. They presented Cody with Marine navigator wings and named him an honorary member of the United States Marine Corps. For one Marine, that wasn’t enough ... so that night, before Cody Green passed away, he took it upon himself to stand guard at Cody’s hospital door all night long, eight hours straight.Nowhere on the face of this planet is there a country so blessed as we to have men and women such as this. I wish I could personally tell this Marine how proud he makes me to be a MARINE!

God... I do so love this country.

ONCE A MARINE....
