With Valantines Day just around the corner, love is in the air. So, why not show your precious Valantine how much you care with a Vintage naked lady sculpture?
Nobody knew romance like the Van Briggle’s- husband and wife. Ann and Artamus Van Briggle told that it was love at first sight when they met in art school. As with all soul mates it was like they’d known one another forever. Of course their passion soon blossomed and they were married. Artamus was a tuburculosis patient and doctors advised the young couple to move to a high and dry climate in order to foster better health. Near Colorado College in Colorado Springs, they set up the Van Briggle Art Pottery Studio. Working side by side, the couple soon found fame the world over, during the Arts and Crafts Movement. Yet their mutual bliss was short lived, as Aurthur soon died from Tuburculosis. Ironically, the very disease which ushered him to the southern Rockies, bringing him life anew, fame and fortune, is also the affliction that killed him. However, shortly before his untimely death, he begged his wife to carry on they’re dream, even if it was without him. Aurthur died in the arms of his beloved wife at the peak of his young success. Heart broken Ann Van Briggle never remarried, nor did the young widow have children to cherish.But the Van Briggle legacy representing passion, true love and true grit still lives on in Van Briggle fine pottery.
Artemus and Ann’s sad but triumphant love story made Van Briggle Pottery highly sought after and very collectible. In fact, when I visited a Belgium fine art Museum back in 1995, I remember seeing a piece of Van Briggle Pottery and hearing that it was found sitting on top of a fireplace mantle, of a house that had been totally destroyed by WW11 bombing. Yet, the only thing that remained unbroken was the Van Briggle pottery bowl, and they said it was a divine testament of the Van Briggle’s undying love. Artamus Van Briggle, a Dutchman, was originally from Holland.
Although this Van Briggle vase is very rare, there’s yet another Van Briggle sculpture of the Three Graces here on . Only its finished in a dark turquoise blue color. Yes, it’s also very pretty. But, I think you’ll agree that this soft neutral shade is more practicle, as it easilysuits any decor. In a pale shade of nude or soft pinkish beige, with a light sprinkling of periwinkle to show contast. I think I remember that the color of this statue was limited to only one year. I don’t claim to be an expert. But, I do know that unlike Weller or McCoy, Van Briggle WAS NOT overly produced and did not flood the market, and was never sold in cheap dime stores. As far as I know it was only produced in CO. SPGS, CO.
Please see photos. One photo shows this statue painted gold. I’ve painstakedly removed the old paint, and you’d never know it was ever there. Believe it or not, this statue was a yard sale find, 25 years ago! And this good fortune couldn’t have come at a better time. My kitty cat needs life saving surgery. This piece is VERY RARE! And it’s absolutly the largest piece of the Van Briggle collection.
Vintage Van Briggle, 3 Graces in mint condition! Limited edition color, very rare. Hard to find. Which makes these 3 ladies a worthy investment. Van Briggle will only rise in value.
