RomanProcurators of Judaea 6-66 A.D.

The PROCURATOR was the title of the governors(first over Judea, later over most of Palestine) appointed by Rome during theyears 6–41 and 44–66 A.D. The rule of the Procurator started with thebanishment of Herod\'s son, Archelaus, in the year 6 and was interrupted for threeyears during the reign of Agrippa I (41–44). Some were of Jewish origin, butall were friends of the Imperial throne. The Judean-Palestinian procurator heldthe power of jurisdiction with regard to capital punishment. The procurator wassubject to the Roman legate in Syria. The Sanhedrin was allowed to exercisejurisdiction in most civil matters. As a rule, the procurators maintainedsupervision over the country from their official residence at Caesarea. OnJewish festivals, their seat was temporarily transferred to Jerusalem in orderto control the thousands who flocked to the Temple who sometimes gave physicalexpression to their hatred of Rome.

Widow’s Mites – Lepton and Prutah

Prutah means, “a coin of smaller value”.A prutah was a copper Jewish coin worth about one thousandth of a pound.A loaf of bread at that time was worth about 10 prutot (Plural of prutah). One Prutah was worth two lepta (singular lepton), which was the smallest denomination minted by the kings of the Hasmonean and Herodian Dynasties. Many think that the lepton (GreekΛεπτον) wasthe coin used by the poor widow referred to in scripture.

Lepton andprutahwere carelessly and crudely struck, usually off center and on small flans. Because they circulated for a long period, they are usually very worn. Legends are almost always unreadable. The actual size of aprutahis less than 1/2 inch indiameter. A lepton is usually about the samediameteras a pencil eraser.

This sale is for three 1st century Judaean prutot. At least 2 of them look to have been struck by Porcius Festus who was the Roman procurator of Judaea during the reign of Emperor Nero (54-68 A.D.). They are 13-16 mm and weigh 1.05, 1.26 and 1.81 gm.

As usual, the pictures really don\'tdo justice. Let me know if you have questions.
