31”, Patent Washable, Papier Mache from Sonneberg, Germany, Circa 1880
Unmarked.Papier Mache head, multi-stroke eyebrows; upper and lower painted eyelashes;
inset stationary paperweight eyes; closed mouth with painted teeth; chin dimple;
original mohair wig.
Straw stuffed cloth body, composition arms and sewn on leather boots.
Excellent condition with minor retouch

She is wearing her original chemise under a beautifully handmade antique dress.
Antique cotton slip & matching pantaloons. Obviously made especially for this doll.On July 15, 1805, Luise Lenore, Duchess of Saxony, granted Sonneberg residents Johann Friedrich Mueller
and his brother Gottfried, the license to manufacture and sell goods made of papier mache.
The Muellers have been credited with the introduction of papier-mache dolls in Sonneberg,
Papier-mache doll heads and body parts were made by gluing sheets of paper together to form
layered papier mache, or by adding various ingredients to paper pulp. This wonderful old doll would be an asset to any collection This doll is featured on page 35 in the “500 Years of German Doll Making”
book by Mary Kromholz. See page in the photos section.
