Irish swords like the one reviewed here made by Legacy Arms (formely Generation 2) may look like a fantasy piece, but this design did indeed have a historical precedent. Wielded originally by the Galloglaigh - mercenaries of the Scottish highlands (of mixed Irish, Scottish and Norse decent) who fought for the Irish from the 13th Century to the 16th Century, the design of these blades was absorbed by the Irish (as eventually were many of the original mercenaries and their descendents).

This particular blade is the favorite design by the owner of Legacy Arms, Clyde Hollis (himself of proud Irish decent) and its weight, balance and specifications make it much closer to the historical originals than anything else in this price range (though still with the kind of variations you tend to expect at this price point)

This is a 39\" Irish Ring Hilt Celtic Medieval Crusader Sword w/ Scabbard. It made by 440 stainless steel. The Ringed Pommel announces the Irish descent of the sword. This sword is well balanced, light and can used with one or two hands. The blade of the sword is high quality carbon steel with a slightly sharpened edge and very sharp point. A ridge has been added down the center of the blade. The blade is well balanced, very light, very quick, and features a rat tang. The scabbard of the sword is wooden with a black leather cover. The drag of the sword is burnished steel with a ball point tip. The scabbard throat is also the same burnished steel that perfectly contours the guard of the sword. The guard of the sword is solid steel with cut off spatulated cross arms. The handle of the sword is wooden over the rat tang of the sword. Over the wood black imitaiton leather has been wrapped around for maximum grip. The pommel of the sword is the Irish circle cut out with the tang of the sword running through the middle of the circle. The pommel ends with a rivet cap securing the tang.
