FOUR SOLID SILVER THIMBLES
HALLMARKED BIRMINGHAM, LONDON, SHEFFIELD 1987, EDINBURGH 1986 IN ORIGINAL PRESENTATION
BOX – VINTAGE AND EXTREMELY RARE!
A very beautiful set of four solid silver thimbles in their original
presentation box. Each thimble carries the
design for a different Assay Office in Great Britain on its lower half, which
is repeated all the way around. Three of
the thimbles carry a design from an English Assay Office: an Anchor for
Birmingham; a Leopard’s Head for London and a Rose for Sheffield. The fourth is from the capital city of Scotland,
Edinburgh and has the Edinburgh Castle motif.
Each thimble is also hallmarked according to its respective Assay
We do not know the occasion for which these thimbles were made. All we can say is that we cannot find another
set that is even similar. And everything
about this beautiful cased set is absolutely immaculate and they are as new
even though they are almost 30 years old!
HISTORY: They were crafted by silversmith Charles
H Hooper of Northampton Street, Birmingham, England in the mid-1980s who made
thimbles of designs of thimble has crisp, clean hallmarks for silver. They are all hallmarked with the letters CHH for Charles H Hooper. TheBirmingham thimble has the Anchor assay mark, the London thimble, theLeopard's Head and for Sheffield, the Rose. Each Assay Mark is followed by the lion passantdenoting solid silver. The English thimbles are all hallmarked with the letter "N" for the year 1987. The Scottish thimble has the hallmark letter "M" for the year 1986.
Each thimble weighs 8g with a combined
weight of 32g.
