40TH FOOT GILT COPPER ALLOY OFFICER\'S COAT BUTTON 22MM WAR OF 1812:
$99.99

From a fortunate find by a metal detectorist is this Peninsular Wars and War of 1812 period uniform coat button for the 40th Regiment of Foot - gilt copper alloy, so I believe an officer\'s example. The regimental design on this button was in use as early as the American Revolution, continuing in closed back formats until at least 1880 or so. That said this early open back example shows a \"FIRMAN & WESTALL / STRAND\" back mark, relevant only circa 1794-1812. The 1st Battalion 40th Foot embarked for Portugal as part of Arthur Wellesley\'s Army in 1808, being present at Rolica and Vimeiro and also at Talavera. It was engaged at Busaco and during the Sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, and at Salamanca in 1812. It then participated in sanguinary exercise at Vitoria, in the Pyrenees, and at Nivelle and Orthes. After the Battle of Toulouse in 1814 the regiment was sent to augment General Packenham\'s forces in America, arriving shortly after the debacle at New Orleans on January 8, 1815. Then sailing to Belgium, it joined Wellington\'s forces in time for the Battle at Waterloo. Brought from reserve and positioned at the center of the line near La Haye Sainte late in the day the 40th square withstood the repeated onslaught of French cavalry and infantry, giving not an inch of ground in suffering 170 casualties - ultimately commanded by its 6th senior officer. This button was recovered at Moron de la Frontera near Seville where the 1st Battalion is known to have been sent during March of 1809, then rejoined the army to fight at Talavera. Condition is quite good for a field find though not absolutely pristine perfect, with some expected minor wear to the surfaces from ground action. Devices are clear and strong, however, and there are nice traces of the original gilt finish. The shank is an ancient loss as usual. In all, just enough \"salt\" for visual charisma and as evidence it genuinely saw the elephant. Size is about 22mm. I\'m not sure what else to say, so there you are.
