4th Class Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke GediminasI am offering the 4th Class Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas. According to the award number it was handed in about 1996-1997. The set includes the box. Boxes violations
Silver cross pattée decussate, the arms with white enamel panels, each bearing three silver rays, with three rays between each arm, the central ray being shorter than the two outer rays, all with three-pointed lily-style finials, a circle between the arms linking the rays, on ornate bar for ribbon suspension; the face with a silver-edged deep red enamel rhomboid bearing the silver ‘Towers of Gediminas’; the reverse with a silver-edged deep red enamel rhomboid bearing the date 1918 II.16 (16 February 1918 – date of the proclamation of an independent Lithuania); on original ribbon; in original slightly worn fitted embossed case of issue by Huguenin Frères of Le Locle, Switzerland, the residue of a sticky label on the inside of the lid. The Order was instituted on 15 February 1928 and amended in 1930 and was the second-created award of Lithuania after the Cross of Vytis. The latter was a purely military wartime award and a need was felt for a civil award that would also be awarded to the armed forces in time of peace for distinguished service to Lithuania. Suppressed after the Soviet invasion of 1940, the Order was revived on 12 September 1991 by the again independent Republic of Lithuania in a new version based on the original design, manufactured by the Mint of Lithuania and awarded each 16th February (the Day of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania and a holiday in honour of the Order). Gediminas (ca. 1275-1341) was Grand Duke of Lithuania, King of Lithuanians and Ruthenians from 1316 to 1341 and may be regarded as the father of the Baltic state of Lithuania. The Towers (or Gates) of Gediminas survive as one of the national symbols of Lithuania. This example is of the 1930-1940 issue. The short period of its award, the small size of the Lithuanian population at that date and 50 years of Soviet occupation make this strikingly designed order hard to find. The Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas was re-instituted to honour the citizens of Lithuania for outstanding performance in civil and public offices. Foreign nationals may also be awarded this Order. The Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas was instituted in 1928. However, its Statute was amended in 1930. The first badges of the Order were struck after the design of Andrius Lopuchinas.February 16 - the Day of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania, is also a holiday in honour of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.During the first decade of independence the Order was awarded to 1 030 Lithuanian citizens and foreign nationals, of which 33 persons received the 1st Class Order, 117 - the 2nd Class, 226 persons - the 3rd Class, 295 - the 4th Class and 359 - the 5th Class.
In 1994, the Vilnius Artworks\' Association started to make the badges of the lower classes of the Order, but in later years they were produced at the Mint of Lithuania, which has been the single producer of the badges of the higher classes of the Order. Until 1996 the ribbon for the Order was made at the Lithuanian Textiles Institute, but since then it has been manufactured at the workshops of the Danish Company \"Morch & Sons.\"
