ANTIQUE 1915 BOXED SET OF 6 STERLING SILVER HANDLES TEA KNIVES/SPREADERS BY JOHN BIGGIN OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND

John Biggin was based on Milk Street and Sycamore Street in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He is described in the 1902 Sheffield commercial directory as a ferrule &c. & handle manufr. His oldest mark is J B in two adjoining circles, which was registered at Sheffield Assay Office in 1902. Biggin\'s firm later became a limited liability company and was renamed John Biggin Ltd.. The new mark became JOHN BIGGIN LTD. SHEFFIELD until the factory closed in 1994

The features set consists of 6 spreaders or tea knives that measure approximately 6 3/4\" long. They come in their original retailer\'s box by William E Johnson from Birmingham. The handles of the knives are marked for sterling silver and most likely they are hollow. There are no markings on the blades so I am assuming that they are silver plated.

The handles bear the following marks on one of the sides
J B in two adjoining circles for the silversmith John Biggin
A crown for the city of Sheffield
A lion passant guardant for sterling silver
\"X\" date letter for the year 1915
Registration number r 580513

The other side of the handles are marked only with a lion, date letter and reg. number.

CONDITION:

The presentation box comes in pretty beat up condition with tear and broken hinges. The knives have some patina and tarnishing and show signs ofusage like small dings, scuffs and scratches throughout. The black filler of some of the handles had come out and pushed the blades a bit.

The featured set of sterling silver handled spreaders will make a nice addition to any collection and be a lovely display for a Victorian or Antique style decorated place!
