  • Item: Grouping of artwork by listed Philadelphia area artist Thomas Bancroft (American, 1864-1934) -- your offer is for the entire 6 piece lot. Most of the pieces are hand pulled prints from the 1920\'s and 30\'s. Not all of them are signed, but they\'re all by Bancroft. Each piece in this lot originated from the Bancroft family estate ca. 1960\'s in the Collingswood / Haddonfield area of southern New Jersey near Philadelphia. Further PROVENANCE: Sanski Art Center Studio & Gallery, 50 Tanner Street, Haddonfield, New Jersey owned by Albert E. Sandecki (d.2013) & Karl M. Sandecki (d.2004). As noted on Askart, Bancroft\'s sale record is $1,625 (set at Freeman\'s, Philadelphia, 2010). Considering the sale record for the artist, my starting offer price which works out to less than 20 USD per item is a real giveaway. Authenticity of authorship guaranteed. Please see pictures posted of Sanski\'s sign and gallery ephemera which are not included in this sale (they\'re part of my personal collection), but serve to illustrate the item\'s past-ownership history. Attention International Buyers: Please contact me for a shipping quote before offerding. Item ships via USPS Express Mail International OR UPS Standard to Canada, and with the price you pay declared on Customs forms -- Thanks for understanding
  • Markings: Varies -- please refer to pictures. Previous owners: Albert Sandecki (Per the Who Was Who In American Art: PAFA Fellow, Art Instructor, Art Conservator, and Museum represented artist) was a Philadelphia-area art dealer with years of experience as was his brother Karl.
  • Age: Most are circa 1920\'s to 1930\'s.
  • Condition: Used. Each piece will have it\'s imperfections. On a case by case basis, per your requirements, options to remedy imperfections may include paper conservation, professional matting / framing, etc.
  • Dimensions: Varies as this is a group listing. All are on the small side at less than 14 inches, ranging from \'cabinet picture\' to \'miniature\' size.
  • Origin: Sanski Studios in Haddonfield, NJ. These items were part of their gallery\'s art collection, although many of them were never offered for sale since the Sandecki\'s didn\'t get around to matting and shrink wrapping most of them. I\'ll be posting more pieces from the collection here on over the next week if you want to check my other listings.
  • Features: Thomas F. Bancroft (Am., 1864-1934) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and was a Member there (Fellowship). As Thomas Eakins left the Academy in 1886 (Bancroft would have been 22 years old in that year), I\'d think that Eakins was one of Bancroft\'s instructors there. Thomas Bancroft was an honored exhibitor with the Philadelphia Print Club, as well as a Staff Artist / Illustrator with Ladies Home Journal and other periodicals from the turn of the century to the 30\'s. A simple internet search will show results such as the May, 1925 Ladies Home Journal where he illustrated \'Rain In Spring\' by Dorothy Sorensen. T.F. Bancroft also illustrated \'Be Still My Heart\' by Roscoe Gilmore Scott. See SIRIS (Smithsonian) website for public collections this artist is included in. Bancroft\'s work ranges from tight Golden Age Illustration Art to American Impressionist landscape scenes.
  • Background: Provenance: Sanski Art Center Studio & Gallery, 50 Tanner Street, Haddonfield, New Jersey. After founder Edward A. Sanski (1906-77) passed, the owners were brothers Albert E. Sandecki (d.2013) and Karl M. Sandecki (d.2004). Upon the recent sale of their entire Haddonfield building (which housed other shops as well) in 2014 for 1.2 million, the remainder of their collection was bought out by Brown’s cleanouts of which I personally acquired many of the choice pieces. Back around the time Karl passed in 2004 my friend Mike Pacitti and I had bought a bunch of paintings from Albert who was clearing out his shop, so this recent group I’ve purchased is a ‘second helping’ so to speak. Some oils we’d purchased from the first batch were by John B. Johnston, son of David Claypoole Johnston. Included in the second batch I’ve just purchased are other artworks from the David Claypoole Johnston family collection which spanned at least two generations as D.C. Johnston’s daughter Sarah Jane Frances Johnston passed in 1925. Both John B. Johnston and Sarah J.F. Johnston studied under William Morris Hunt who like Van Gogh was influenced by Francois Millet (Van Gogh frequented the circle of John Peter Russell in Paris who was married to American singer Caroline De Witt Merrill). Several of the pieces I’ve acquired in this ‘second batch’ were just tucked away because the Sandecki brothers were keeping them (they had a fondness for illustration art) and other pieces were ‘pending research’ since Albert felt they could be by the hand of a famous artist such as NC Wyeth, Pablo Picasso (ceramic), Vincent Van Gogh (ink drawing), etc. I now have all of these pieces and will be selling them on of course as ‘research projects’ only and not formally attributed to any specific artists. As you can imagine the Sanski gallery, having been located in the affluent Haddonfield area where Steven Spielberg is from, came across a lot of high end art since their opening in 1954. A 1979 New York Times article on them, “A Shopful Of Paintings In Haddonfield”, describes some inventory at the time by artists Emil Carlsen, Newbold Trotter, Alson Skinner Clark, Thomas Bancroft, etc. Having spent their summers in Harborside, Maine since 1964 they’d found a lot of treasures up there over the years including a stash of oils by Irving Wiles which my old friend Mike Pacitti had restored for Karl via Jimmy Murphy in ME. Background: Albert Sandecki was PAFA trained, taught art classes at Sanski Art Center (120 students per week), was in-house art conservator, and his own paintings hang in museums such as the Corcoran. He received the President’s “Volunteer Service Award” in 2008. Karl Sandecki’s role was mostly ‘searching out’ the artwork, gallery sales, etc. The Sanski Gallery was a place that was jam packed with art (American to European, 1700’s-1900’s) from floor to ceiling! Please see the pictures I’ve posted of their original store sign, old photos, newspaper articles, etc. which are now a part of my personal collection. PLEASE SEE MY store FOR A NICE SELECTION OF ART, ANTIQUES & COLLECTIBLES.
