Fantastic large collection of antique primitive folk art. I took this set to the antiques road show in Salt Lake City in 1999 and they appraised at approximately $15 to $20 per animal at the time. That would be $900 to $1200 at the time. There are 60 animals in total. This sale will be starting at less than 1/2 of the lowest appraised value from 18 years ago. One cow has a broken leg (but still stands). The older gentleman at the time stated that the animals were carved in the early part of the 1900\'s to 1930 at the latest as a way to pass time-most likely in the evening. Hand carved and hand painted by what was most likely a rural, farmer type person with much skill with a pocket knife! The set was acquired at a Northern Utah estate sale in approximately 1990. Quite detailed work. Some of the sheep have wire horns. Some of the cows have whittled horns, 1 horse has a yarn tail, my favorites for all the years I have owned the set are the pigs. Thesmallestones (piglets) measure 1 1/16 long X 3/8\" wide X 11/16\" tall. The largest animals, (the horses) stand 3 1/2\" in height X 3/4\" wide X 3 1/2\" in length. I should have written down the type of wood in 1999 but I didn\'t. I believe they are all made of pine as they are quite light.A simply \"fantastic\" approximately 100 year old collection in a rare large set or size. I\'ve been offered money to break the set have have not done so and hope you wont as well, but that is your call if you win the sale.
