The removal of encrustation, especially from a shipthatwent down in warm Caribbean waters like the Winchester did, is a very longanddifficult task. At the same time it is very exciting to see an item forthefirst time in hundreds of years. Often we get surprises like broadarrows oreven completely different items than we thought they would be.

A four cannon ball cluster. This is a 1-2 hour task.

It takes a steady hand and careful blows to be sureyou do not damage theartifact.

Note the flintrock on the encrustation

It is a joy to work with such well preservedartifacts. Note the silver color ofthe cannon ball.

Very few people have a chance to own a piece ofhistory like this. This shipwreck is special. Being salvaged in the 1950\'s andstoredall of these years brings us back to a time when mostpeopleonlycaredabout gold and silver, but one man knew the value of historyand we benefit fromthat today.

The HMS Winchester

The 944 ton, 4th Rate 60 gun British man-of-warWinchester was built in 1693 atBursledon by William Wyatt. She was 121 feetlong, and she had a 38 footbeam. The Winchester was originally commissioned in1693 under the commandof Captain Edward Bibb. While en route from Jamaica toEngland, a plaqueon board quickly spread throughout her crew, rendering themunable toperform their duties. Her Captain, who was also sick, was put ashoreinJamaica. The Winchester\'s command was turned over to Captain JohnSoule. After leaving Port Royal, the crew continued to drop like flies fromthescurvy. One report lists only eight able bodied seamen still standingwhenshe was sailed onto a reef on September 24, 1695. A few of hercrewincluding Captain Soule were transferred to another vessel. CaptainSouledied later, and unfortunately almost all 400 of her crew were lost.
