How to care for your opals .
Opals are more delicate than other gems like diamonds and sapphires. They require a little more care and tender treatment when worn. Opal, like any other gemstone, can be broken, chipped, scratched, or lose its shine with heavy wear and tear. Prolonged exposure to harsh detergents and other chemicals can damage or \"dry out\" the stone. Be particularly careful about exposing opals and sterling silver to chlorine or chlorine bleach which will affect it. It\'s best and we highly recommend that you remove your Opal jewelry when playing sports, gardening and performing household tasks like washing dishes and showering. Try to avoid knocking or scraping your Opal as this may damage it. Due to it\'s delicate nature we do not recommend that Opal jewelry, particularly Opal rings be worn every day. Opal rings are best worn as dress rings for special occasions rather than for every day wear just around the house.Ethiopian opals require different care than other opals due to their ability to absorb water. While it has been popularly considered a good idea to soak opals in water, this does nothing for an opal and in fact, should be avoided in the case of Ethiopian (Wollo) opals. If they do get wet, or are allowed to soak in liquid for a length of time, they will lose their play of color and become almost opaque. Not to worry – if allowed to dry in a normal Environment, they will revert to their original appearance, usually within a few hours, but this depends on size of the opal, how much water was absorbed and humidity. For this reason, it is best to avoid water altogether, especially dirty or colored water, as well as even oils. Just clean them with a dry, soft cloth so as not to scratch or dull the polished surface.
