Admitted to the bar in 1860, he soon after found himselfserving in the American Civil War inthe 28thWisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, serving first as alieutenant in charge of “B” Company of this volunteer regiment. He was inaction in the WesternU.S. Campaigns, and then, in 1864, served as an aide to General Willis A. Gorman! Senator Davis served in the peacetreaty talks that ended the Spanish-American War.
