The map that illustrates this edition “Cartedu Mexique et des Pays Limitrophes situés au Nord et á L´Est” is without doubtone of the most significant contributions to Mexico´s cartography of the 19thcentury and an exceedingly important mapof the Southwest, including Texas and California, considered a cornerstone byStreeter and covering most of Central America, the Caribbean and southernUnited States. Humboldt (1769 – 1859) was a famed German traveler, geographer, astronomer, geologist and naturalist, arguably one of Europe´s leading men ofscience of the first half of the 19th century; having been receivedfavorably and invited by the Spanish Crown in 1799 to the region –where hestayed until 1804 along with Aime Bonpland-, Humboldt had access to virtuallyall sources of information, even unpublished ones. While residing in MexicoCity, he searched the Spanish and Mexican archives for geographical informationlater included in his maps; hence it includes the most up-to-date informationavailable to date, particularly of the territory under the influence of theViceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico, New Mexico, Texas and California). “Of superlative Californiaimportance” (Howes).
