A Field Guide to the Birds, ROGER TORY PETERSON 1934 reprint Easton Press:
$200.00

Roger Tory Peterson\'s seminal work, A Field Guide to the Birds, is rightly famous and bibliophiles thrill to find a copy of the first edition of 1934. It is such an important work that two facsimiles of the first printing were produced after Peterson died in 1996. Houghton Mifflin\'s reprint is commonplace and easily obtainable any day of the week. The Easton Press edition saleed here is at the other end of the availability spectrum.

That bothHoughton Mifflin and Easton Press produced a commemorative reprint of the first printing of the FirstEdition of the Guide is a testimonyto the importance of this book and the legacy that it created. If you are reading this, you are probably familiar with the \"points\" of a first edition book in any of its four states. Commemorative books retain most traditional points of a first state book (a first printing) andinclude the date 1934 on the title page, although no tissue papers were used.

I have been collectingthe many variations of RT Peterson\'s A Field Guide to the Birds for more than20 years now and this particular edition has proven the most hard to find ofany of them. In that span of time, I have seen only 10 for sale anywhere. Try tofind them on Bookfinder -- you won\'t (or, at least, I never have). They aremore difficult to find than actual first editions themselves! In that same frame of time, I observed more than 40 transactions for actual first printings. The price for this book is well below what I believe this issue deserves to fetch, so $200 is as low as it goes.

Easton Press\'commemorative offering, complete with their trademark gilt edges, silkbookmark, archival paper, and leather boards (but no jacket -- EP books are allissued without jackets), is an attractive reproduction. The EP books may havebeen given as a bonus to some subscribers who purchased a complete set of theEaston Press Field Guide Series, but I have never known that for certain. [If any viewers happen to know that backstory, please let me know.]

This book is in outstanding condition with a sharp ribbon edge and could be called as new except for this one fault:

1) the included bookplate is tipped in (attached) on the ffep -- to the plus, it is included (often missing), clean and unmarked.

Sorry, no internationalsales. Questions are welcome. Paypal payment required within 3 days of close ofsale. I will combine shipping with multiple purchases.
