A Fine and Unusual 19th Century Bronze Sundial..................................:
$338.77

...........A unique and sophisticated engraved cast bronze dial plate, 14\" diameter, heavy and substantial, with the elegant, original, bronze gnomon..............
There are 6 concentric engraved dials, as shown, the outer with Roman numerals. The next has the names of the following places, each engraved next to a numbered line: \'Isle of France, Jerusalem, Cape Good H, indecipherable - initial R, London, Gibralter, Teneriffe, indecipherable, Greek Isles, Barbados, Quibec, Jamaica, New Orleans\'. Inside that are the names of the months, then numbers and what look like astrological symbols. The innermost dial is marked for 10 minute intervals. Some of the engraving is a bit weathered and hard to decipher, but most of it remains legible, although rather difficult to photograph clearly. (My apologies for the pictures). It is very well engraved, definitely by a skilled professional, who has not signed it anywhere.
It is engraved with the name of the first owner - \'Mr Francis Bell Inglewood House\', with a shield enclosing 3 bells, and the date \'Oct 11th MDCCCXXXI\'.Inglewood House is a Grade II listed farmhouse, off the A6, south of Hesket-in-the-Forest, in Cumbria. The Bell family are recorded as farmers there for several generations during the 19th century. This particular Mr Francis Bell was born in 1790.
It really is quite a significant instrument - unusually complex for a dial that could possibly have been made in quite a remote part of the North of England, perhaps by a talented local tradesman, maybe a clockmaker.
The attractive gnomon stands 7 3/4\" high, and measures 6 1/2\" at the base.
I will post it worldwide - please contact me for shipping costs, before offerding.
