A French Silver-Plated Swing-Handled Sugar Basket Late 19Th Century:

This is a French sugar basket dated in the late 19th century. It is silverplated, unmarked- the thin hard base metal alloy from which it has been constructed being better suited for its highly ornate, baroque repousse style, than the softer silver metal. The condition is very good, apart from the glass liner which has suffered two nicks and a scratch on its rim. This doesn\'t detract, though, from its highly decorative beauty.

It is stamped with four panels of leafy scrolls, shell-work and flowers over a cross fluted ground, on splay feet and a tall, scrolled handle and a clear glass liner. It is a very collectable piece, very characteristic of the period.

It measures 4-5/8\" high, 4-7/8\" across and a little over 3-1/2\" deep. It weighs 199 g without the glass liner.
