A Golden Trashery of MAD: The latest collection of humor, satire, art, and fun for all from Mad Magazine, the third edition of MAD’s rare hardcover books, contains a wide selection of black and white articles from the earliest issues of MAD and includes a section of beautifully rendered full-color pages from MAD’s early magazines with art by Jack Davis, Will Elder, Wally Wood, Don Martin, George Woodbridge, Al Jaffee and others, including an introduction by Sid Caesar.
First published in 1960 by Crown Publishers, New York, this book is a first edition. Hardcover, 136 pages, 8 1/4” x 10 3/4”. Original full cloth binding with mild shelf wear. Dust jacket in excellent condition, with some tears, small chipping and age spotting (see pictures). Displays beautifully. Inside pages are bright, clean and sharp with no age patina. A particularly diligent previous owner has marked the issue numbers of each article’s original appearance with blue ballpoint pen in neat handwriting, which is really quite charming and does not distract from the contents of the book (see pictures).
MAD was created in 1952 by Harvey Kurtzman and published by William M. Gaines for E.C. Comics. After the nefarious Comic Code was enacted in 1954, MAD transitioned from a full-color comic to a glossy, slick magazine and was eventually helmed by Al Feldstein after Kurtzman’s hasty exit. The magazine is still on stands today, dressing down current events and pop culture with it’s classically incisive and subversive wit.
