A superb smooth and tactile heavy linen tablecloth from Madeira, measuring an impressive 66" x 100", together with 12 matching dinner napkins.
The set appears to have considerable age - certainly no older than mid-20th century and comes high on the list of how quality Madeira work is rated. It would be very expensive to buy in Madeira today. The cloth shows little signs of wear although a bit grubby from storage and it did have the slightly foisty small of having been tucked away for a number of years when I obtained it.
The set is still in its original cream colour (colour varies with the light in the photographs), the embroidery being a lovely coffee colour worked with silk thread. The flowers are huge and well raised, the pattern is an ornate one as can be seen from the photographs and the cloth edge is ornately shaped.
The 12 accompanying linen napkins measure approx 15.1/2" x 16" and have the exact flower but in a smaller version, to match the work on the tablecloth. They have a staggered scalloped edge.
I have not laundered the linen, preferring to leave it as obtained, so it will require washing to brig to life the wonderful quality of the work and will then make a very impressive background for formal dining with the layout of the central embroidery running down the middle and the ornate cutwork.
As indicated, it does have a slightly grubby look to it and there is very slight rubbing to the back of some of the edges, consistent with this type of edge, but I am of the opinion that if it has been used, it would have been on no more than one or two occasions.
An exquisite Madeira banqueting cloth with its 12 matching napkins and rare to find in such a good condition.
