What aninteresting 3-dimensionalLeaf brooch! With the clean lines and cool design thatare hallmarks of the best Scandinavianmodernist jewelry, this vintage Danish pin by Gertrud Engel for the Anton Michelsen company is simply elegant - and so sculptural, with loads of movement!Expertly capturing in sterling silver the grace and beauty of a leaf, this pin is so finely wrought and realistic you almost expect it toflutter in the breeze or scuttle off along the ground. Beautifully proportioned, the sides of the leaf were carefully bentand shapedto appear wavy, giving the brooch maximum dimensionality and movement. Incised and oxidized (deliberately darkened) vein lines in the curled leaf add contrast, textureand interest. (And I must have been staring at it too long because it is reminding me of a small animal or even a fish or sting ray, with its stem the tail.)

Thisgreat vintage Danish brooch was produced by Gertrude Engel for theMichelsen Company in the 1950s and in European Designer Jewelry, similar pieces from this series appear on page 250. This oneis awonderful example of her work. Gertrude Engel was one of the Danish craftswomen who were important figures in Danish design in the Fifties. She was inspired by nature and this design, like others for which she is known, was based on plant life found on the coast of Denmark.

It is signed on theback, \"AM\"under a crown, which is the mark of the Anton Michelsen Company, \"Sterling Denmark\" and what looks like \"Rougie\" in script but is actuallythe stylized signature \"GEngel.\" (Penultimate photo.)

Measuringa little over 2-1/2\"byjust under 7/8\" wide by about 5/16\" deep, the brooch is inVery Good / Excellent vintagecondition with just light surface scratches, dirt and tarnish as expected for its age. It has alovely vintage patina; cleaning and polishing are left to the buyer\'s discretion.

Simple and elegant; organic and amazingly dynamic, this pin is a superb example of the fine workmanship and design that characterize the most collectible mid-century modern Scandinavian silver.
