8148 Rosewood Tea Caddy

Description

A mid 19th century antique tea caddy, perhaps William IV or early Victorian in period. The caddy is in rosewood with contrasting edging and there is a mother of pearl escutcheon.The caddy is of single division form with one section for the tea with the original lid, to the other side is the opening for the mixing bowl. There is a cut glass mixing bowl of good fit, but probably later than the caddy. The underside of the lid and the mixing bowl cavity are lined with embossed red paper which is certainly old but difficult to ascertain if original.The caddy has a working lock and key and is polished with natural waxes and ready for display. A nice unfussy example with nice grain to the wood.

Condition

Some knocks and marks as typical for these items but nothing which detracts from the item - see the images for general condition. Lock works fine and hinges all OK. Some damage to escutcheon with chipping and nibbling. Minor shrinkage splits in lid veneer but not gapping. Loss of foil lining to tea compartment as normal for its age. Damage to paper lining of mixing bowl cavity. Mixing bowl probably later than the caddy.Approx Dimensions
