A PAIR OF RARE & EXCEPTIONAL MING DYNASTY LARGE DRAGON-THEMED CLOISONNE VASES:

These magnificent vases represent the distinct quality and intricate design of cloisonne art in the Ming Dynasty; enamels and cloisonne flourished during the reigns of emperor Ching T\'ai and K\'ang Hsi . These cloisonne pieces are forceful, bold and free in design; pure, brilliant and vivid in color. The dominant colors in these vases are blue, green, yellow and red. The vases are each embellished with images of 12 dragons: 2 stylized green dragons around the upper neck; 3 pairs of stylized green dragons over the shoulder; 3 yellow, red and green 5-clawed dragons wrapped around the body of the vase; and one green dragon close to the base. The cerulean blue ground depicts waves and wave scrolls through which the dragons emerge and re-emerge like ribbons. The bands around the rim, neck and shoulders of the vases are various forms of lingzhi. The interior of the vases is turquoise. The metal body is copper. It is interesting to note that while these vases appear to be identical, they were actually designed to complement each other. This is readily noticeable in the yellow dragon which is the \"face\" of the vase.Both vases are in excellent plus condition. No dents, \"pop-outs\" or repairs. Each vase is 15 1/4\" tall; app 8 1/2\" wide or 27 1/2\" around right below the shoulders; 5 3/4\" mouth (rim to rim edge).
