A Rare Wang Hing Chinese Silver & Mother of Pearl Caviar Dish and Spoons c.1900:

Here we have a very rare late 19th or early 20th century mother of pearl and Chinese silver mounted caviar serving dish and 4 mother of pearl caviar spoons. The base of the stand is made from Chinese silver in a bamboo design and marked with a WH 90 for Wang Hing and 90% silver. The top is a large piece of polished mother of pearl and it comes with 4 spoons (2 different sizes) made of the same material. It is customary to serve caviar from mother of pearl items because it is believed that metals impart a metallic taste. This is a hard thing to date but should date from anywhere between 1880-1920

Measurements (approx): it measures 10.5\" (265mm) wide at its widest point and is 3.75\" (95mm) tall.

Condition; there are a few issues that need pointing out on this piece but nothing major. The biggest issue is a chip to the edge of the tray which is clearly visible, This was done a long time ago and in fact doesn\'t really detract from the piece and could be ground out if required. Mother of pearl is a very brittle material so damage is commonplace. 2 of the spoons have small chips on them which is to be expected. All over it just requires a good clean, the silver has become very tarnished over time and the plate and the spoons have a thick layer of dirt also. I have left this item totally original to how I discovered it.

All in all this is an excellent high quality piece of Chinese export silver by a good maker that would be ideal as a present for anyone who loves caviar.
