A Very fine late Victorian silver gilt Claret jug with naturalistically formed handle and thistle and leaf decoration about the body. The lid with a thistle to the finial. The collar with indentations and cut card edge as a continuation of the naturalistic theme. The cut glass lead crystal body with a star cut base, diamond cut body beneath a band of incised feather decoration. The neck of shaped panelled form .
Marks to the collar for London 1894. The handle marked with the maker Walter Thornhill and the lid also marked for London 1894 and with the retailers mark, W Thornhill and Co. 144 New Bond Street.
The whole piece is in marvellous condition. The gilt is still very good with only minor wear to the high-points of some of the thistles about the neck. All the hallmarks are clearly struck and legible. The hinge is good. The glass is in good order.
This is an exceptionally attractive Victorian claret jug of very fine workmanship. Both the glass and the silver-gilt work are of the very highest order. This is very unusual design not often encountered. It is part of the aesthetic movement that was sweeping the arts world at the end of the 19th century.
