Offered here is the rare A Thousand Days in the Arctic, by Frederick G. Jackson. With Preface by Admiral Sir F. Leopold McClintock. Illustrated from Photographs by the Author and Drawings by R.W. Macbeth, A.R.A. Clifford Carleton, Harry C. Edwards, & F.W. Frohawk, from Data Furnished by the Author. With 5 Original Maps. Published in New York by Harper & Brothers, 1899, 1899. First American Edition.
A day-by-day journal of the Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition (1894-97). The party established winter quarters at Cape Flora, Franz Joseph Land, and remained there for 3 years. By sheer coincidence, Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen encountered Jackson\'s camp in June of 1896 during the Fram Expedition, and enjoyed several weeks of generous hospitality (after surviving through the winter on walrus and bear meat). Throughout their stay, the party made sledge journeys in the archipelago, surveyed, made scientific collections, hunted, and described the polar night. Also included is a chapter on scurvy.
Condition: Very Good. 1st American edition. Backstrip is hinged at top and has a 3/4\" slit in it as pictured. Binding secure. Tops of leaves edged in gilt, other edges deckled. Clean and tight inside, no writing, marks or odors. 2 frontispiece portraits and 188 illustrations (many full-page) plus 13 plates and 5 colored folding maps which are all in excellent shape. (First one has a small tear as pictured). This is a thick, heavy book measuring 9\" x 6\" with 940 pages.
