A GILT AND LACQUERED BRONZE SEATED BUDDHA WITH THREE-TIERED PARASOL
THAILAND, RATTANAKOSIN PERIOD
19TH CENTURY
Crafted in the characteristic style of Rattanakosin (Bangkok) period Thailand, this gilt bronze figure depicts the Buddha seated on an ornate, multi-tiered pedestal in bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness enlightenment.
This piece retains an ornate, three-tiered parasol; which is affixed to the back of the statue in an artistic and spiritual offering of providing shelter to the Buddha.
In the tradition of Rattanokosin bronze work, the piece has been cast around a cement core and later coated in black lacquer followed by a combination of gilding and red (cinnabar infused) lacquer throughout.
