DebraMcDonald Nangala, born 11-10-69 at Papunya Camp and is the granddaughter of thelate Shorty Lungkata Tjungurrayi (c.1920-1987). Shorty was a founding member ofthe Papunya Tula art movement, a Pintubi man from Lake MacDonaldin the Gibson Desert, Central Australia. In 1948 he moved to Haasts Bluff and Papunya, bothDebra and Shorty’s stories refer to his country of Lake MacDonald. Shorty was one of the original founding members ofthe Papunya Tula Artists who began painting for Geoffrey Bardon in the early70’s. Debra was married to the nephew of Turkey Tolson and son of thegreat female artist Mitjili.
Debra’smother is Martha McDonald Napaltjarri a highly respected Pupunya Tula artist. Her Talent is obvious & is a rising star worth investing in her artwork. In July2010 Debra had a highly successful artist in residence exhibition at MulgaraGallery, Sails of the Desert, Ayers Rock, Northern TerritoryTheDreaming depicted in this painting revolves around the site known as Lungkarda(home of the blue tongue lizard). In this paintingDebra has used the skills and techniques she has learnt from her associationwith old masters over the years. This piece depicts traditional symbols and istypical of the old men from Kintore and Papunya.
Women’s Ceremony
A striking colorful design depicting sacred ceremonial grounds androck hole sites surrounded by Tali (Sand hills) in the area of the artist’sbirthplace where the young women are taught by the elders and law women.
Also depicted are body paint designs used by women and the dancingtracks used by women as they travel from one ceremonial ground to anothercelebrating their land and culture.
Senior clan elders from each skin group gather in the two sacred ceremonialsites to teach and initiate their young women who merge together from the outersites. The Elders teach their Dreamtime songs & culture which goes back40,000 years. The painting also depicts traveling paths to and from Ceremonialgrounds and Mungari - bush tucker sites where women collect and prepare bushtucker.
