(LxB). Pp. viii, 493, [1], 6, 6, 4, 4, 3, [1], 15, [1] pages. Handsomely bound in a fine modern 1/2 brown calf leather binding in antique style, gilt decorated spine with 6 raised bands & two black & red gilt lettered morocco labels. Complete as issued. All the laws passed by the General Assembly of New Jersey up to the then-Tory Governor William Franklin (illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin, who opposed the push for independence). Covers all of the laws passed in the state, including control of fisheries, gaming (including cock fighting), the running of the goals (jails) and, probably most interesting, the laws governing the control of slaves, including such laws as trading with slaves without consent of their master, rewards for individuals finding slaves, slaves convicted of stealing to be whipped, and punishment of slaves for attempting to ravish or striking their master. The balance of the laws are replete with unusual and informative insight into the governing of a colonial province. Isaac Collins, the printer, also printed many other documents, as well as the colonial paper currency of New Jersey and the currency notes of the newly-formed state republic. A rare edition at the dawn of the American Revolution-Independence. A classic work. CONDITION REPORT: A rare book bound in a fine modern 1/2 brown calf leather binding in antique style, gilt decorated spine with 6 raised bands & two black & red gilt lettered morocco labels (See Scans below), no wear/tear to covers, spine, ends & corners (See Scans below),pages with age toning & mostly marginal foxing throughout (See Scans below), the binding is tight & intact (See Scans below). The leather is smooth & supple to the touch. (See Scans below). Note: Faint old waterstains to the blank top outer margin of the first few leaves (See Scans below). Previous owners ink signature dated 1914; on the title page. A scarce title.
