Alexander the Great

The son of Philip II, King of Macedonia, and the young Alexander wastutored by Aristotle until the age of 16. Widely acknowledged as one of thegreatest generals that ever lived, Alexander was only 20 years old when hebecame the king of Macedonia upon the assassination of his father. In justthirteen short years, he changed the face of the world. By the time of hisdeath in 323 B.C., he brought the entirety of the Persian Empire under Greekrule. From the borders of India to the Adriatic Sea, from Egypt to the BlackSea, Alexander\'s victories expanded the Greek empire across three continents. Not only named the King of Macedonia,Alexander took on the titles of: Pharaoh of Egypt, King of Persia and King ofAsia (he made that one up). Alexanderdied at the age of 32 of an unknown illness in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar IIwhile on campaign in Babylon.

This coin depicts the mythical Greek hero, Hercules, onthe obverse wearing his lionskin headdress. The reverse depicts his club, bowand case, all symbols of his hunting abilities.Hercules\' attributesincluded strength, courage, ingenuity, and sexual prowess. His myth tellsthe story of hisfather, Zeus, King of the Gods, having an illicit affairwith Hercules’ mortal mother.
