History:
This is one of the Baby Peggydolls Louis Amberg & Sons of New York, New Yorkmanufactured in 1924. She was made in Germany. Amberg made Baby Peggy dolls between 1923 and 1925. They were all a little bit different so the details are important such as their doll id and whether they were made of bisque or composition. This one has a bisque shoulder plate head but others had socket heads.They are all very rare.
Head and Body:
Beautiful condition bisque shoulder head (head and shoulders are all one piece no chips or cracks). Beautiful condition bisque hands and bisque half arms, no chips or cracks(other half is stuffed leather). She has her doll idengraved on thetop of her back which reads: \"19 e 24, LA & .S.-N-Y. , Germany, -50-, 982/2\".Rest of her body is jointed stuffed kid leather. Bisque is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks. Kid body is in excellent condition. Her legs, feet and body are absolutely perfect. Her toes are even stitched in. Her body is beautifully stitched. There is an originallabel on her torso thatreads: \"JDK Germany half cork stuffed\".(body made by Kestner) She is 21 inchestall.The only part of her that showsstaining andwear is wherethe top of her kid arms meet her torso body (please see photos 10 and 11). They may have been reattached or repaired a long time ago but they function fine. Alsoa small amount of the leather has come away from one side of her screw arms (on the right arm) but theleather on the other side of this arm is intact and works perfectly.
Face:
Perfect head and face. No chips, cracks or facial wear. Very fine, very smooth.She has very darkbrown glass sleep eyes in perfect condition. She haspainted eyebrows. She has real eyelashes and painted lower eyelashes. She has painted lip colour. She has very rosy cheeks. Her face is very finely sculpted as are her ears. She has the sweetest expression. Her numbers (982/2)indicate that she has the pensive face rather than the smiling face although I find it difficult to tell these faces apart.
Hair:
Her wig isher originaldark brown mohair wig in bob hair style. Baby Peggy was well known for this hair style. The wig is in excellent condition.The wigmoves around a bit so probably could do with a touch of glue here and there.
Clothing:
She wears thestyle of the day,a pale blue sheer organdie chemise with matchingslip over pantaloons to the knee also of sheer pale blue organdie. The chemise sports a large collar with blue trim and a ribbon with tiesdown the front. It closes at the back with snaps.The chemise hassome pin sizedholes with one bigger half inchtear that I have photographed (please see photograph 12). She has rayon socks that are in perfect condition and a lovely pair of leather or leatherette shoes in palesalmon pink which have fully functioning round porcelain buttons. The sole on the left shoe shows some wear as the heel from the sole has come away however the heel on the upper part of theshoe is still intact. The dolldealer who sold me this doll said that her clothing was factory made andoriginal to the doll although as it is not tagged I cannot verify this. This outfit is certainly very similar to what Baby Peggy wore in photographs around this time and the fabric used is of the day also.
Box:
This doll will come in her own custom made archival acid freemuseum cardboard box. I commissioned a conservationcompany to make this box for her.
