This Victorian Charm String of buttons is one of many I acquired when I purchased the button collection of the Milton Hershey Museum several years ago. The collection had been stored for years and many of the charmstrings were (yikes) just crammed into boxes, and lacking any provenance. I tried for months, afterwards, to gather all the information i could about them, but came up short. Therefore, I do not know if this string was put together by a young Victorian woman. Some were, but others were strung by volunteers of the museum because they had a ton of beautiful, donated buttons, many of them duplicates to those on display in frames in the museum halls.This one measures approx. 72\" - 6 feet! - and I did not even attempt to count the buttons - which is nearly impossible to do 100% accurately. (Doubled up in the main photo it is approx. 36\" x 2 = 72\" = 6\')I would say 90-percent of the buttons are metal - the rest are black and other glass and a small percent other materials (pearl, possibly one or two horn, etc.)
The museum charmstring I recently sold on was approx. 24\", and I counted more than 130-buttons, on the conservative side, and a few were damaged. I had no idea how to price it, so I listed it at 499.99 with a best offer, and it sold immediately for the full asking price before anyone could put an offer on it, to a buyer who was thrilled. This is, by far, the largest of the group (except for one on my wall :-) ), and is three times the size, at least, and most, if not every, button is in fabulous condition, from what I can tell.I only get 12-photos, so I did not concentrate on any close-ups (please use the zoom feature) and I could not encompass the entire charm string in just 12-photos. But it is...FABULOUS! I could not, possibly, capture every single, beautiful button in this lot. This charm string is PACKED and many buttons are not shown in the photos. There are many unique Victorian metals I have never seen, Golden Age, awesome waistcoats and black glass, and much much more. These pieces of Victorian history do not come on the market often, and are becoming increasingly scarce. The buyer will not be disappointed. That much, I know.
