Hello, thank you for having a look at our sales. This week we are very excited to be offering the what I believe to be one of our most important sale sales to date, and our Last large sale of the season. This sale offers a wide variety of fine and important Chinese works of art including bronzes, jades, paintings and other rarely found scholarly objects.

The sale features items from two important estate collections, along with some last porcelain examples from the Michael Vermeer collection. We have featured items from both these estate collections in the past and now the estate has asked us to sell the remainder of the collections. They include items from the estate of Mr. H.H Pao of Toronto who owned a high-end shop in the famous Four Seasons hotel in Toronto for several years throughout the 1980s to 1990s period. Mr. Pao was a dear friend whom was considered one of North America’s top experts and scholars in many categories of antique Chinese art. The sale also includes jades and other early Chinese bronze and archaic items from the estate of A Abraham. Mr. Abraham was a highly respected Asian Arts dealer and collector in the 1950-70’s period. He frequently travelled to China, Hong Kong, New York, and London on buying trips at the time. Abraham owned the Imperial Jade shop in the famous King Edward hotel in Toronto until his retirement in the year 1976, 40 years ago. When the shop closed many of the pieces went to Sotheby’s in New York for sale. Abraham kept some of his most favorite examples that we are now offering for sale. Most of the pieces have been in storage since the shop closed in 1976 and have not seen the light of day until now.

Up for sale is a Very Fine and Large Chinese Carved Spinach Jade Dragon Plaque. This plaque is a beautiful example that is superbly carved throughout. The plaque is carved of a beautiful and authentic spinach jade. The plaque has a large dragon among clouds with lotus foliage to the front side, along with a carved and gilt dragon figure to the reverse side. I am told this plaque was purchased in Shanghai around 50 years at the famous Shanghai Antique and Curio shop. This shop was started in the late Qing dynasty and was the only shop authorized at the time to sell Chinese antiques that could be taken out of the country. Many presidents and other famous people have visited and purchased items from this shop over the past 100 years.

I am told this plaque was likely carved in the later Qing to Chinese Republic period. The plaque has a nice rosewood frame that is intricately inlaid with silver wire, complementing the plaque very nicely. The estate had this plaque displayed on a table but it could be easily hung as well if one desired. The plaque is the largest one-piece spinach jade plaque like this I have personally ever seen. The plaque with frame itself measuring 21 inches tall, by 12 1/4 inches wide. This plaque is in very fine original condition with absolutely no damage or repairs. The plaque is thinly carved and light very easily emits through the spinach jade. As you can see I have included a picture with light behind the plaque, truly amazing.
