Ancient Bronze Laotian Seated Buddha Amulet, with Acanthus Leaf Halo, 8-9th Century.

Description: Sacred Temple Amulet of a rare and unusual Laotian meditating Buddha, considered to be one of the earliest representations of the Buddha, portrayed wearing a halo made in the form of the Acanthus leaf. A technique very interesting, as it demonstrates the influence of Greek art, via Grandharan and Mathuran schools of sculpture, as anthropomorphic representations of the Buddha started to emerge, begining in the first(1st) centuries A.D., in northern India, and spread throughout surrounding countries.

The image of Buddha is depicted seated in meditation on an elevated throne in the \'Virasana\' position, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The left hand is resting palm-open on his lap, while the right hand forms the \'Bhumisparsa\' mudra, or Calling the Earth to Witness, gesture. The buddha is portrayed with a downcast expression, the face is serene, with well defined features, wearing a diaphanous garment which appears to cover both shoulders. The head is covered by a hemispherical \'Ushnisha\', topped with a tall gem radiant finial, and fashioned behind the head by an Acanthus leaf halo, appearing outstretched as a flame flickering to a arching point. Cast in bronze, the naturally aged surface is covered in a crusted green malachite patina, from years of exposure to the elements, and the Environmental conditions in which it was maintained.
