The Majiayao culture was one of group of Neolithic communities who lived mainly in the upper Yellow River region in Eastern Gansu and northern Sichuan around 3100 to 2000 B.C. Three phases of Majiayao culture have been identified, including Majiayao(ca. 3100 - ca. 2700 B.C.), Banshan (ca. 2600 - ca. 2300 B.C.), and Machang (ca. 2200 - ca. 2000 B.C.). Majiayao phase potterytypically has a red-buff earthenware body with a smoothed surface oftenfinished with black, brush pen painted decoration, including geometricalpatterns and complex running-spiral designs with two to four arms. Majiayaopots vary greatly in shape, ranging from bowls to jars with tall necks.
