I’m told these darling, darling, darling little dolls may be American, possibly by Mary Frances Wood; the experts will have to determine their origins. On a contrary note, the dolls were sent from England to a lady in historic Butte, Montana sometime during the first half of the 20th century. They were sent to Butte in a Parkinson’s Royal Doncaster Butter-Scotch box, which has housed them ever since. The dolls have the sweetest little hand painted faces, much like the work of Nora Wellings, and perhaps a very rare type of Mary Frances Wood’s work (she was famed for her Native American dolls). The clothing and hats are made entirely from leather, both smooth and suede; the legs and arms are wire structure. I do not know what the torsos or head are made from. I believe the faces are made of boiled felt. There are three 7+\" elves (the knees are bent for sitting so they are actually longer, more like 8-8.5\"), three approx 6.5\" dolls, and four 4.5\" pixies/ elves. Truly, I wish I had more information about these dolls–they could be prototypes, I just don’t know. In any event, they are professionally made, but hand made. The leather is all cut and fitted.
