This antique set of classic Japanese hibashi (fire chopsticks), dates back to the late Meiji era (c. 1910). They were used to move burning hot coals from one place to another and also to tend the coals while they burned (see picture 2). They are made of bronze, and the ends of the handles are in the form of stylized cranes with bowed heads in a mating pose.

The tips are gnarled to help in holding onto the charcoal (see picture 5). With exception to slight oxidation at the ends and a warm patina they are in very fine condition. They measure 10\" (25.5 cm) long.
