Greetings from Massachusetts Antiques!For your consideration:An ANTIQUE 1890s Victorian 19th Century MEN\'S TENNIS TEAM Large SPORTS PHOTOGRAPH120+ years old!\"Tennis has its origins in the medieval era, but the modern form of lawn tennis was patented in 1874 by Walter C. Wingfield in Great Britain. The first Wimbledon tournament was played in 1877. The first tennis court in the U.S. was built in 1876, and the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association was formed in 1881. International competition began in 1900 with the first Davis Cup tournament between the U.S. and Great Britain.\"A really amazing and rare example of a 19th Century (c1885-1895) men\'s tennis team. 7 team mates stand proudly in white suits and ties and all sporting fabulous handle bar mustaches! The men can also be seen wearing cummerbunds and chains. The square style racquets look similar to that of lawn tennis. One can also note the very large structure behind the team which looks to be made of massive stone slabs!This photograph came from a large collection of from a Massachusetts estate of various New England sports, club and society cabinet photographs. The style of dress and origination of the image lead me to believe this is an American club team perhaps one of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association? I do not believe this to be a college team for the men seem to old. I also have displayed below an image of the 1890 Brown University Lawn Tennis team to show a comparable example of an American Lawn Tennis team from the same period. Please note the Brown image is not included.
The photograph is in Excellent condition; clean, bright and vibrant with only light hints of wear. Housed in what looks to be its original antique hardwood frame and matted with a thick cream color matting and protected behind glass. The piece has been re-backed with brown paper and new picture wire was added by the previous owner. I have not removed the image to see if there is an inscription or any information on the back. Displays very handsomely and is ready to hang!Image measures 9 1/2\" x 8\" and with the frame measures 18\" x 14 3/4\"Overall, a great example of a rare large 19th Century Men\'s Tennis team photograph in wonderful condition.
