An original 18th-century engraved portrait of Robert Cecil, politician/MP for Wootton Bassett and son of 3rd Earl of Salisbury. Mezzotint on laid/chain-lined paper, engraved by John Smith after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller. Published between 1700-1725. Very old inscription to outer margin mistakenly identifies the sitter as Thomas Cecil. Some general age/discolouration and light creasing, otherwise good. Measures 34.5 x 24.5cm (plate-mark); 42.5 x 28cm (sheet).
