German Seaman Made ANTIQUE 1914 WORLD WAR I SEEMANNSHILFE SMS EMDEM MODEL SHIP:
$28.00
This rare model ship was one that was made by German seamen who were stranded in New York at the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The men were housed at the German Seamen’s Mission in New York. The models bore the legend of Seemannshilfe (“Seamen’s Aid”) and were sold for $.50 each. This was a model of the German ship Emden and is dated 1914-15. The words and dates are written on both sides, although some of the lettering is now hard to see. It measures a little over 5 ½” long and about 2 1/8” high. It is in very good condition for its age, and the paint is still mostly intact and bright. It is a heavy, solid metal piece and would make a great addition to any World War I collection.
