White & Co of Binghampton, NY.Please see pictures abovetakeninside all angles of all handmade country piece at all angles rotated so you can take a pictoral tour.
This is a very large and bold piece with open top, finely shaped high ear lug handles on each side, deep brown Albany slip glazed interior, impressed Numeral "2" Gallon incised stampbelow tooled shoulder mark, thick rim lip nicely formed, and a single but perfectly brushedplump Blooming Onion in blue slip on front centered nicely with dotted décor all about ending on a multiple leaf wispy stem.....like the blooming onion appetizer at Outback Steakhouse. Many of the 19th c pieces DO indeed take their décor clues from Mother Nature.....of course, in a world devoid of neon signs, billboards, and electric, the simple graces around the potters' world became a prime focus for décor on these sturdy stoneware pots that have withstood the test of time. N. White is a signature bold floral or veggie décor as his trade mark. Once often seen, these good pieces are now getting scarcer to find. The signature Is impressed N. White. & CO. Binghampton.
Large Crock measures 11.0" tall and 9" acrossdiameter base.
Condition Report: One owner, estate fresh find, no oily residue or white flakes inside as many do have. Clean exterior with bold cobalt blue with NO fry bubbling. The only reportable flaw is a tight hairline pronged open-Y shape srt on angle 3.25" tall placed to left of onion stem uprising from bottom, the 3.5" hairline Y-prong is VERY tight and slight hairlineI can't even get my fingernail in it. I mention these for utter accuracy in reporting careful up close examination. The slight hairline continues 2" on angle on bottom but overall, this damage is VERY tight and the crock is very sound to handle and display with no worries it will fall apart, it is likely old damage from use in its heyday. The third dot on onion stem also has a stone ping stuck on top that shows tan. The crock has a mild brown kiln blush running vertical down back color difference of patina. All of these things are normal to crock ageing, and buyer acknowledges and accepts as-is accurate report of very nice period item.
Lovely shape and large accommodating size is perfect for kitchen utensils, toilet tissue holder,etc......so many creative country uses, or simply add to your crock collection to admire!
