Description

Antique 19th Century rare German Hanau Solid Silver impressively large lidded tankard, in the style of the early 16th Century pieces, parcel gilt, beautifully chased and embossed with Bacchanalia scene with a drunk Bacchus carried by satyrs, cherubs and nymphs. Wavy rims, scroll handle, the hinged lid is embossed with fruits and terminates with a stunning fruit finial. This piece is very well conserved, Marked with German and English Hanau pseudo-marks (900+ grade of silver), Maker's marks for an unidentified Hanau silversmith (please follow this link). It dates to year 1880's. The piece also bears an Austro-Hungarian mark for imported goods (year 1901-21).
