The Paisley pattern isa term in English for a design using the boteh, a droplet-shaped vegetable motif of Persian or Iranianorigin. Such designs became very popular in the West in the 18th and 19thcenturies, following imports of post-Mughal versions of the design from BritishIndia, especially in the form of Kashmir shawls, and were then imitatedlocally. Its western name derives from the Scottish town of Paisley, a centrefor textiles where quality woven paisley designs became widely produced during the early-mid19th Century.
