A solje or \"sun\" brooch is a gorgeous piece of Scandinavian jewelry

that is almost always circular, filigreed or otherwise carved, and hung with \"spoons\"--

small concave disks whose insides reflect light.

In folklore, they are said to protect the wearer from evildoers,

imaginary and otherwise, by repelling them with the

sight of their ownreflection!

The most ornate soljes are usually worn by family matriarchs.

A solje like this one would be a lovely gift for a new mom,
