This is an original 1/4 plate daguerreotype of an American man with the plate made by French Pioneer Marc Antoine Gaudin (1804 - 1880) measuring approximately 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches in very good condition with an original detached half case. The plate had original broken seals as pictured. The Plate is marked \"Double, A. Gaudin, 40,\" thehallmark of Antoine Gaudin & Bro. 9 Rue de la Perle, Paris, a Frenchcompany whose products were widely used by daguerreians throughout America. Marc Antoine Gaudin was a revolutionary French Daguerreian was part of the inventions infancy in 1839 (see page 20 of the Daguerreotype in America). His works appear in major museums such as the Musee D’Orsay. The Burial of the Duke of Orleans in 1842 in the Musee D’Orsay is attributed to Marc-Antoine Gaudin. He also worked with his brother Alexis Gaudin. Marc Antoine Gaudin was a French chemist and a pioneer in photography and contributed to the Avogadro gas theory by proposing that some elements form diatomic or polyatomic gas. Plate is referred to as A GAUDIN DOUBLÉ 40 with rosette, lamb and cross between 2 crescent moons with letter I and P. Thanks for looking.
