Up for sale is an amazingly detailed antique Buddhist pouch, bag or waist Satchel.This beautiful hand worked embroidery is very old, dating to the late 1700\'s - early 1800\'s. Qing ( Ching ) Dynasty, China ( 1644-1912).
It is worked upon a silk orange field in natural dye silk colors of olive green, indigo blue, light and medium blue, cream,dark brown and a splash of purple.
Several types of traditional China embroiderystitches used with amazing detail, including the forofferden stitch and the chain stitch.
The traditional buddha design of a dragon emerging from wave forms looking up at a rooster orphoenix or possibly a bird of paradise,surrounded by cloud forms. In the center of the bird is a reverse swastika or yungdrung.The swastica signifies auspiciousness and good fortune as well as Buddhas footprints and Budhas heart in Tibet.
The back fabric is a woven brown silk, which has a casing at the top for belting at the waist.Perhaps it was used to hold the buddhists Japamala or Mala beads for meditative chanting mantra.
It measures: 6 3/4 \" full length, 5 1/4\" length of the front x 5 1/8\" widest x 4\"narrowest.
The condition is very good considering its vast age. Two small areas have unstitched, one at the dragons tail and one on his talon or claw.His one eye is also missing the stuffing used to give it dimension and the lining on the left has detached from the edge, but cannot be seenwhen the top flap is down. It is expected to have some wear, or it would be suspicious of its age. (Please see photos)
