MY PASSION IS HAND EMBROIDERY I SELECT LINENS TO BUY FOR THE QUALITY OF THE EMBROIDERY AND THE LINEN.
CRESTED LINENS FROM A GRANDE MAISON IN THE BERGERAC REGION
THE WORK ON THE CREST IS STUNNING REPRESENTING HOURS OF WORK AND AN EYE FOR THE DETAIL.
STUNNINGMONOGRAMON THIS ANTIQUE "FIL DE LIN" LINEN FRENCH SHEET.
"Fil de lin" is the term the French use for the finest quality fibres from the softest part of the flax.
which means the linen has the weight, but will feel so light to sleep under.
The Frenchdescribeit as fluid.
linen white in colour and soft and silky to the touch.
as the sheet has had little use the colour is slightly uneven white in places ,only seen in strong sunlight
as you use and wash it will turn to bright white.
as linen was always expected to last for 20 years ,you will get years of use from the sheet.
SIZE 95" WIDE X 140" LONG
HUGE BEAUTIFULLY HAND EMBROIDERED CRESTED MONOGRAM "MB" IN HIGHRELIEF
SIZE 7" x 6"
The embroidery know as “Broderie rembourre” a three dimensional highly durable style
where the depth and presence to the work is created by different layering techniques.
there are raised and padded dots that decorate all along the edge and along the sides to give a return of 28"
There is a row of drawn thread work to decorate the edge.
literally the threads are drawn from the linen and worked to formintricatedesigns.
THE SHEET HAS 3 SMALL FADED STORAGE MARKS LOST IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SHEET 16" FROM THE EDGE
WHEN I GAVE THE FIRST WASH THEY FADED CONSIDERABLY
I EXPECT THEY WILL FADE AWAY AS YOU USE AND WASH THE SHEET.
WAS NOT ABLE TO CAPTURE THE MARKS IN A PIC.
AS THIS SHEET HAS BEEN LITTLE USED AND WAS STORED IN THE ARMOIRE FOR MANY YEARS.
AT THE SALE I BOUGHT OTHER LINENS FROM THIS WONDERFUL HOUSE SEE LINK FOR CRESTED NAPKINS
SEE PIC FOR OTHER STYLE OF CREST FROM THE SAME TROUSSEAU.
THERE IS ANOTHER SHEET LISTED THE SAME BUT NO STORAGE MARKS.
TRADITIONS OF THE FRENCH TROUSSEAUIn the humblest farmhouse to the grandest chateau, most household linens were marked with hand embroidered monograms
from a simple kitchen cloth to the most beautiful linen sheets and table linens,
care was taken to "MARK THE TROUSSEAU" with the couples initials
The trousseauwhetherhumble or extravagant was brought by the bride and remained her property.
This tradition carried on until the early 20th century.
THE LINENS I FIND BELONG TO THIS TRADITION, MOST DATE FROM 19th TO EARLY 20th century.
