This is a superb antique George III sterling silver vinaigrette which has been modelled in the form of a purse or small handbag. It is quite beautiful and is silver gilt with all the gilding being in excellent condition. It was made by the famous silversmith Joseph Wilmore and it is hallmarked for Birmingham 1817.The box is decorated with beautifully engraved patterns that make it look like the purse has a flap and sewn edging.The reverse has 2 small initials engraved that look like MM or WW. The interior is gilded and it has a pierced grill which is engraved with floral patterns.The condition is excellent with no visible damage and it opens and shuts crisply and both the outer hinge and the hinge on the grill work perfectly.A superb example by an important maker and a very unusual style.
