ANTIQUE JESUS PAINTING

CHRIST PANTOKRATOR WITH 4 ANGELSHOLDING THE INSTRUMENTS OF THE PASSION (ARMA CHRISTI)

I believe this is a hot wax painting; beeswaxmaybe with oilpaints or color pigment paints, on canvas or netting onboard.

The picture shows Jesus, maybe the Christ Pantocrator or Pantokrator; a specific depiction of Christ used in the Early Christian Church and remains a central icon of theEastern Orthodox Church.Above are the symbol letters IC XC for Jesus Christ andupon the three arms of the cross inside the halo behind his head are the Greek letters ώ Ό Ν (omega, omicron, nu) which literally means “the being” or more precisely “He who is”. Surrounded/supported by 4 angels, 1 in each corner.Overal very good condition but there is some dirt and a chip above his head to the right. I believe this is very old, but I\'m not sure when it was made, nor by whom, nor where it came from. It was found with some other church items, one being a processional cross that may have had Russian Orthodox roots that I have sold already.
